Contrary to countless contributions to populist debates on nationalist subjects, ‘putting the Great back into Great Britain’ is as stupid as a campaign to ‘put the North back into North America’. Great means major as opposed to minor; a larger group of territories as opposed to a smaller one. It is a geographical distinction referring to extent or size. It has nothing to do with greatness as in superiority. While undoubtedly stupid in many respects President Trump is less stupid to claim to be making America ‘great’ again, as he is at least using the word correctly, even though when applied to his country it has always been a matter of opinion. You can’t go back in time, and if you did you’d inevitably find it wasn’t as great as your nostalgia.
